I have yet to try the basic Four Roses Yellow Label (had some of the Single Barrel earlier this year- amazing!), but stumbled upon it today at a new to me liquor store- on sale for $15.99. Pulled out the iphone, pulled up The WhiskeyJug site, and bought a bottle because of this review! It was with this trepidation that I approached a K&L tasting of Four Roses bourbon. My Nose Noticed:* A little alcohol burn, but mostly caramel and sweet corn.It's 5 years old, so mostly what I'd expect. First Sip: A little bit of burn, but at 80 proof, it's pretty minimal.

Since then, however, the company has done some major retooling, and has been named American Distiller of the Year by Whisky Magazine for four years running. $20 a bottle for Four Roses Yellow is more than fair as long as expectations are kept in check. Unlike some of the comparably priced Bottled in Bond (BiB) bourbons we've reviewed, Yellow is 20 proof points lower and generally has a more balanced, yet less exciting flavor profile by comparison, making it more ideal for mixing.
